Randy Settenbrino, a grandson of immigrants, reincarnated an Orchard Street Tenement as a stately Hotel.
People said “You’re nuts. It’s a tenement. There’s nothing worth preserving here.”
“I wanted to properly represent the immigrant experience,” Settenbrino said. “While maintaining Aesthetics.”
“The first thing I said after buying it was, ‘I want to preserve the building’.”
Fire escapes on which immigrants once slept were removed, cut down and reattached as decorative balconies.
And in the front suites, the balcony doors open to a million-dollar view of NYC.
