Epic Games Maker Acquires Finnish Game Security & Anti-Cheat Software Company Kamu

On October 8, Epic Games, a Fornite developer and publisher, announced the buyout of the Finnish Anti-Cheat Software Company Kamu to fight Fortnite cheaters. Neither of the parties revealed more details regarding the deal in the joint statement.

Epic Games plans to expand its market share and services by recruiting new technology, engine and service developer experts from Finland. Epic Games acquires also new offices in Finland that will help with building a  bigger and stronger developer team.

The Epic’s CEO and founder Tim Sweeney shared in the official news release.

“Kamu’s team and tools have been key to building a vibrant Fortnite multiplayer experience that’s for all players”.

The  Kamu CEO Simon Allaeys also shared that he would need some time to evaluate how the software continues to work with non-Epic titles and would love to keep those licensing opportunities. Expressing his excitement about the merger, Simon Allaeys said,

“Joining the Epic family is not only a childhood dream come true, but a huge boost for our mission to help developers create beautiful gaming experiences”

Kamu is a Helsinki-based is a game security, telemetry and live service management company and official maker of Easy-Anti Cheat. The Finnish company has reported that its anti-cheat software has already been installed on more than 100 million PCs globally.

Originally launched in 2006 for Counter-Strike 1.6 leagues, the startup has managed to expand its reach and now its anti-cheat software protect Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands, Total War: Arena, Far Cry 5, and Watch Dogs 2 games and tournaments.

The Kamu anti-cheat software is also used in Epic’s Fortnite game as well to detect and prevent any security issues.

Allaeys said,

“Battling cheating in games was just the start; today our products also help developers stay competitive by identifying player needs as quickly as they emerge. (,,,) Building and launching games today is incredibly challenging, and only half the battle.

It is expected that the merger will result in a future sustained growth development for both Epic and Kamu as they their services complement and together they can develop and offer very competitive high-quality products in the game industry.
